Cubanita

Cubanita
Summer just started, and already I can't wait to get out of here to begin my mother-free life at the University of Michigan in August. But until that happens, I'll be teaching art at Camp Anhinga, same as last year. I start tomorrow, and Mom is anything but thrilled. Surprise, surprise. If it weren't for my father, I'd never get to experience college away from home. I'd be stuck, taking classes locally, learning to cook and sew the holes in my brother's underwear on the side, cultivating my domestic skills as a back-up career. Because that's what a good cubanita does, you know, thinks of nothing but home. Yeah. Okay. This is the story of Isabel Dí az, a Cuban-American who would rather just be an American, period. A funny and romantic summer read, as well as a touching story about discovering your roots, cubanita proves we all have room in us to become more than who we think we are.

Natalie Portman Collection
Natalie Portman Collection
"Natalie Portman Collection" contains "Where The Heart Is," "Anywhere But Here" and "Garden State." "Where The Heart Is" - Sometimes life's closest, most powerful ties are not those we're born with, but the ones we create along the way. Ashley Judd and Natalie Portman star in this offbeat, delicious slice of life about a down-on-her-luck southern teen who, after gaining 15 minutes of fame for giving birth to "The Wal-Mart Baby," begins to put her life together with the help of the kind, quirky strangers who become her surrogate family. Based on the #1 best-selling novel, this "brilliantly funny, deeply moving, beautifully acted" (KNX/CBSRadio) film co-stars Stockard Channing and Joan Cusack in an inspiring celebration of love, friendship and self-worth. "Anywhere But Here" - Adele is a flashy, flirtatious dreamer. Her daughter, Ann, is a quiet, no-nonsense realist. On the surface, they're like oil and water, but deep down, they're two of a kind. "Susan Sarandon makes magic" ("Chicago Tribune") and "Natalie Portman soars" ("NY1") in this funny and touching story about a mother who knows best...and a daughter who knows better! "Garden State" - Writer/Director Zach Braff delivers "an Oscar-worthy performance" (CBS-TV Chicago) in this quirky coming-of-age comedy that has been hailed as "the seminal film for today's generation" ("USA Today"). Twentysomething, emotionally detached Andrew Largeman (Braff) returns home to New Jersey after nine long years. Now, as he tries to re-connect with his past, a series of chance encounters with Sam (Natalie Portman) - a free-spirited girl who's everything he isn't - sets the stage for a fateful, mind-blowing take on what his future might hold. Co-starring Peter Sarsgaard, Ian Holm and Method Man, "Garden State" is "hilarious" ("Rolling Stone").

A Free Soul - A Free Soul is a 1931 Pre-Code film which tells the story of an alcoholic defense attorney who must defend his daughter's ex-boyfriend on a charge of murdering the mobster she had started a relationship with; a mobster whom her father had previously gotten an acquittal for on a murder charge. A Free Soul stars Norma Shearer, Leslie Howard, Lionel Barrymore and Clark Gable.

Free, White and 21 - Free, White and 21 was a 1963 movie by self-proclaimed "schlockmeister", Larry Buchanan. It was based on the true story of the controversial trial of a black man accused of raping a white woman in Dallas, Texas in the 1960s.

The comedians of the merger of showbiz and politics and, along with Will Jordan, of stretching the boundaries of mimicry - Shelley Berman, of a new political cynicism - Lenny Bruce, of the banalities of broadcasting - Mel Brooks, of the 1950s and 1960s were a totally different breed of relevant, revolutionary performer from any that came before or after, comics whose humor did much more than pry guffaws out of here to begin my mother-free life at the University of Michigan in August.
