Family Funny Story

In Jewish Texas: A Family Memoir by Stanley E. Ely,

In Jewish Texas: A Family Memoir by Stanley E. Ely,
Stanley Ely says that when the fiftieth or so person confronted him with a skeptical, "You mean you're Jewish, and you're from Texas?" he decided to do more than smile and say, "Yes". The result is this funny, caustic and nostalgic tale in the tradition of popular regionally and ethnically focused memoirs. Ely combines the stories of his grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, siblings and friends, and an abundance of family photos as he shares his family story from the immigration of his parents (as young children) and grandparents to Galveston from Russia and Romania until today, as Ely faces his own senior years living in New York. The story of Ely's family and their friends reflects the impressive growth of Dallas and its Jewish population in the first half of the twentieth century. As he narrates the building of new lives in Texas, Ely also portrays the integration of a minority segment of Jewish immigrants in America outside the great cities of the North. Though the book is not a typical "coming out" story, the reader also learns of Ely's gradual and sometimes reluctant acceptance of himself as a gay man.

Normal by Lucia Nevai,
Normal by Lucia Nevai,
There are no storybook families in these twelve wonderfully daring stories. Here you'll find parents, children, stepchildren, husbands, and wives - all normal families; all unforgettably real. Lucia Nevai's twelve variations on normality place us in the company of characters created by a writer of uncommon talent. These portraits include: "Thanksgiving with Dorrie & Heck", in which a competitive family talent show leads to one teenager's visit to the emergency room; "Close", in which a family therapist en route to her brother's memorial service tries to heal her own fractured family by linking her hands spread across the map in an in-flight magazine; and "Normal", in which a young mother struggles to impress her estranged father with her new life during his first visit to his infant grandson. From an urbane ex-hippie in Manhattan to a disabled war veteran in rural Louisiana, these characters never quite connect with the people they love most - they just don't get it. But, luckily for us, Lucia Nevai does, because in the midst of all the missed connections, something remarkable, and often very funny, happens. She gently strips away her characters' defenses, but never their dignity, showing us what it means to be a family. Nothing in these twelve stories of missed connections is exactly what it seems. But what's unmistakable is that we're in the hands of a remarkable writer - a writer whose graceful and witty portraits of eccentric normality are like pages from a family album that we can all recognize.

Funny Short Story - Funny Short Story In Persuasion Nation Zany postmodern fiction, like conceptual art, runs the risk of being interesting only because of the originality of its premise. A writer might pen the only existing short-story about a polar bear that gets axed in the head as an advertisement for Cheetos, but if two hundred writers suddenly used the same idea, would the first story still be the best? As any good comedian can attest, premise is important, but execution is king. ...
